Mobile phone users in three Brisbane suburbs may be unable to contact triple-0 for weeks as upgrades to a local shopping centre will cut power to telecommunications infrastructure.

Telstra customers across three suburbs in Brisbane's north will not be able to call, text, or use data at times over the next two months, as shopping centre upgrades affect all networks.

Telstra texted customers in Gaythorne, Mitchelton and Everton Park last week warning of network disruptions between January 30 and March 7.

Meanwhile, Vodafone and Optus customers can expect slower data speeds and reduced reception at times, but not complete blackouts like Telstra phones.mobile phone reception cuts

The Brisbane suburbs which will experience mobile signal disruptions have a combined population of more than 20,000 people.

 

Mitchelton's Brookside Shopping Centre will be upgrading a cooling tower on top of the building from Tuesday until March 7, which will mean all phone providers with towers on the shopping centre's roof, will have to cut off their signal as well.

A Telstra spokeswoman said on Monday that customers in Gaythorne, Mitchelton and Everton Park would lose reception at times while the repairs were underway.

But the spokeswoman said the phone provider had taken necessary steps to minimise the impact on customers in the affected areas.

"We have numerous base stations around the area which will take over ... so that the impact should be minimal," she told ABC Radio Brisbane.

In separate statements, Optus and Vodafone said other sites in the area would provide overlapping coverage during the upgrade works.

"Optus has made changes to nearby sites to ensure they are best positioned to handle the additional traffic," an Optus spokeswoman said.

"Vodafone operates from several other sites in the Mitchelton and surrounding area which will provide overlapping coverage during the works," a Vodafone spokeswoman said.

In the event of an emergency, Telstra phones that can't pick up a signal will switch to another provider's network in order to call triple zero.

According to a statement on the Telstra website, the disruptions to mobile services were expected to occur from Monday to Friday 6am-6pm but not weekends.

The Telstra spokeswoman said a temporary Cell on Wheels will be sent to Mitchelton and payphones in the affected areas would be available to use free-of-charge during the next two months.

She added some customers will be able to receive and make calls using the internet through Telstra Wi-Fi Calling.

More than 20,000 residents live in the affected suburbs, according to the 2016 Census.

Gaythorne mobile users will be affected from Tuesday until February 9, Mitchelton will experience patchy coverage from February 12-22 and Everton Park customers can expect disruptions from February 23 to March 7.

Prepare for your Move-out

Now that you are settling,  all of the stressful steps of selling your home are over and you can let the transactions run their course. Keep in mind that after all of the signing and initiating, you still need to move your belongings out of the house before you are completely finished. Anything that you do not convey with the title will have to go. This may include the refrigerator, the washer and dryer, and anything you specifically jotted down and disclosed to the buyer that would be coming to you after you sold.

Sellers who have already relocated usually have their home completely move-in ready for the buyers throughout the process. This is when a house is entirely empty and vacant when potential buyers are walking through it. If you are a seller that still lives in the home and have not yet relocated, be sure to get pre-approved to purchase a new home ASAP.  You don’t want to be left out in the cold because you don’t qualify for the home you were planning on purchasing. Make sure that you are financially ready to move out so buyers can move in.

Any garbage that is left in the house while moving out must be removed and thrown. Don’t be those sellers who make your buyers clean up your messes for you. Gather your belongings to pack them so that you are ready to move to your new home. If you have many items that you don’t want to keep, two helpful options can be a garage-sale or selling on Gumtree or eBay. By doing this, you are cleaning out the house and making, even more, money at the same time.

Whether you still live in the home or you have already relocated, always remember to leave the utilities on until after the home is settled!

When we started planning for this year we learned that Teralba Park is to undergo an upgrade and will be closed during the Easter period.  So that means we need to find another location to hold the Annual Easter Egg hunt.

Warning! Fire Ants are in our Suburbs (What to Look For!)

Biosecurity Queensland is urging residents and businesses to check properties following the detection of fire ants at Bridgeman Downs.Fire Ants in Brisbane North warning

The red imported fire ants were found by a vigilant Brisbane City Council worker and confirmed on January 5.

Biosecurity Queensland officers destroyed the nest and baited the area to ensure all ants in the colony were destroyed.

Biosecurity Queensland urged all residents and business operators in Bridgeman Downs, Albany Creek, Carseldine, Aspley, McDowall, Brendale, Bracken Ridge, Fitzgibbon, Zillmere, Chermside, Chermside West, Stafford Heights, Everton Park, Everton Hills, Bunya and Eatons Hill to check their properties, gardens and work sites, and report any suspicious looking ants.

Fire ant nests look like mounds of loose soil with no visible entry or exit holes.

Labor MP for Aspley Bart Mellish said fire ants could be identified by their coppery-brown colour and darker-coloured abdomen.

“While small, 2—6mm in size, their sting is incredibly painful and in rare cases can lead to anaphylactic shock and death,” Mr Mellish said.

“Fire ants are one of the worst invasive species to reach Australia’s shores and can ruin our lifestyle, restricting everyday activities such as barbecues, picnics

and sporting events.

“Australia is the closest any country has come to eradicating fire ants, but we still have a lot of work to do to beat this serious invasive pest.”

Places fire ants are likely to be found are in and around logs and rocks, gardening materials such as pot plants, lawns, garden beds, taps and utility pits.

Identifying fire ants

Fire ants (Solenopsis invicta) are quite small (2-6mm) and come in an unusual variety of sizes within one nest. Their heads and bodies are coppery-brown and their abdomens are darker. They are aggressive, particularly near the nest, and can inflict painful stings.

It is vital that you are able to identify fire ants on your property. Watch the video for identification help.

 

Fire ant nests

Fire ant nests have no obvious entry or exit holes.

Nests often appear as dome-shaped mounds, but these mounds are not always easily identifiable. They can be up to 40cm high, but may also be flat and look like a small patch of disturbed soil. They are usually found in open areas such as lawns and pastures, and along roadsides and unused cropland.

Fire ant warning for brisbane northNests can also be found next to or under other objects on the ground, such as timber, logs, rocks, pavers or bricks. Look near pots or any areas of disturbed ground as well as:

  • in pot plants on the ground
  • in stores of topsoil, mulch and potting mixes
  • under landscape materials (e.g. logs, stones)
  • under timber or pallets on the ground
  • adjacent to buildings and other structures
  • in untidy or overgrown areas
  • near areas of permanent water (e.g. the banks of dams, rivers, ponds, aquaculture containers)
  • tufts of grass in open areas, where the soil is built up around the tufts.

A little local history

Everton Hills is a wonderful, family-friendly suburb. It’s reminiscent of an era when you chatted over the fence with your neighbours, people looked out for one another and shopkeepers knew you by name.

Indigenous past

This sense of community dates back to the first inhabitants. Aboriginal clans including the Turrbal, Kabi and Waka enjoyed many social and ceremonial activities including the bunya feasts in the Blackall Range and the Bunya Mountains.

Explorers and settlers

In 1823, a party led by John Oxley arrived to navigate North Pine River, naming it Deception River. A year later, Oxley returned to collect samples of Hoop Pines that grew in abundance throughout the area and later helped build settlements in the south. The river later became known as Pine River.

Frances Griffin was the first free settler, establishing Whiteside Run in 1843 north of the river. James Sibley and Joseph King followed in 1844 with Samsonvale Run on the south.

In the late 1850’s, Tom Petrie leased ten sections of land from the Griffins to form Murrumba run. In 1859, James Cash, having leased his land for eight years became the first freehold landholder in what was to become Pine Rivers Shire.

The Crown Lands Alienation Act passed in 1868 and at least half the leased areas of major runs were resumed and offered up for selection. Small crop farming, dairy farming and timber getting began to flourish.

Everton Park Heights Estate

Early development

With gold discovered in Gympie in 1867, Cobb and Co. Coaches expanded their passenger and mail services into the Pine Rivers area. Tom Petrie's Murrumba homestead was the perfect site for the change of horses between Brisbane and Gympie. A mail office and hostelry were established from which the North Pine Township grew.

Local government was set up in the 1870’s followed by schools and railway. The dairy industry boomed, rum distilleries opened in Strathpine and Normanby and a cornflour mill at Lawnton.

War and Post War

During World War II, an estimated 50,000 Australian, American and allied troops were stationed in camps in the Pine Rivers Shire and three airstrips were constructed. After the war, farming continued and electricity arrived to most households. The Australian Paper Manufacturers’ Petrie Mill opened in 1957, Sideling Creek was damned to create Lake Kurwongbah in 1961 and PGH Brickworks opened using local supplies of clay.

Population Boom

Around 1960, the first residential subdivision took place in Albany Creek. Residential development continued throughout the 60’s, changing the rural landscape with houses and businesses appearing along Gympie Road and in the Hills District - Ferny Hills, Arana Hills and Everton Hills. Originally to be called Everton Parks Heights Estate, Everton Hills was in the Pine Rivers Shire until 2008 and has now been amalgamated into the Moreton Bay Region.

In the 70’s Pine Rivers’ population grew to over 25,000 (from 8,760 at the 1961 Census.) Brendale was established as the main industrial area and the North Pine Dam was opened in 1976 to supply water into Brisbane and surrounding districts.

Population topped 63,000 in the early 80’s whilst industry and commerce continued to expand opening up local employment opportunities. In late 2004, 140,000 people called the shire home with a 2021 prediction of 200,000.

McDowall Sales up over 300% – November Real Estate Roundup!

November Market UpdateSales of properties in November in McDowall skyrocketed as buyers keen to move in before Christmas jumped into the market.

The number of sales last month of 13 was the highest recorded sales for several years in this highly desirable suburb.  Even more encouragingly was the highest sale price of $900,000 for a Streisand St property.

With sales activity increasing and prices rising 2018 is looking good for this inner north suburb.

High prices were recorded in all suburbs of the Madeleine Hicks Real Estate service area during November with 2 properties changing hands for in excess of $1million in Everton Park.

We also saw a reduction in the number of properties listed for sale during November as sellers were not wanting to be trying to sell over the Christmas period.  This trend continued in December as well, so it looks like the buyers will fighting over few properties in the New Year.

Our experience has shown that having your property listed for the start of January is perfect as that is a time when buyers are  actively looking.  They may be on holidays, so have the time to search properly.  The other reason that being listed in early January is that there are usually fewer properties on the market so the chances of your property selling and getting a great price are enhanced.

October Real Estate Market Update. Hello everyone, my name is Allie Coutts from Madeleine Hicks Real Estate and I’m doing the October roundup for sales that settled in October for our 4053 postcodes.

We’ll start with McDowall, there were just four properties that settled in McDowall in October and the highest of which was the one in Gielgud Street for $747,000.

For Stafford Heights, there were 7 properties that settled in October, 24 available. The highest of which was $631, 500 and that was the one in Caratel Street and $620, 000 for that property in Amott Street. In Stafford also 7 properties settled in October, 51 available and ranged from the high $860, 000 Gamelin Circuit, round to the low $200k for those units have settled.

For Everton Park that wins the competition, 11 properties settled in October, 92 available. The most impressive one is that large plot of land in Pullen Road which settled $1,200,000 and I then a lot of properties in the mid-fives up to 600, 000 thousand that settled in Everton Park. So that’s our market roundup for October. I hope to speak to you next month.

Everton House Story

An important but almost forgotten part of our area's history and that of Brisbane’s in general looks set to be demolished and replaced with townhouses.

Brisbane City Council recently granted planning permission for Everton House at 19 Dargie Street to be demolished and replaced with 20 townhouses and parking for 30 resident's cars despite local community objections.

The large property, now owned by classical guitar virtuoso Karin Schaup, was built by Sir Leon and Lady Peggy Trout more than 50 years ago and became a focus of the art scene in Brisbane and home to one of the best private art collections in Australia.

Leon Trout was born in Redhill in Brisbane in 1906 and became a solicitor and accountant and founded one of Brisbane's leading law firms at the time. He was a highly successful and community-minded person who took up many leadership roles in Brisbane businesses and community organisations.

His interest in art began at school when he bought his first print and he went on to become the founding president of the Queensland National Gallery Society and is credited with playing an important role in the relocation of the Art Gallery to its present location.

Sir Leon and Lady Peggy were particularly fond of the works of John Russell and Charles Conder with works by Russell filling one gallery in their home and those by Conder occupying three rooms. They were also avid collectors of works by artists from the Heidelberg School by such artists as Frederik McCubbin, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and of portraiture by William Dargie, William Dobell and many others.

Alert readers will have noticed that many of the artist's names are reflected in street names in the area which is due to the fact that the couple sold off parts of their property as the Trouts Estate development and named the streets after their favourites. They were determined to maintain the up-market nature of the area so the plots were sold under a covenant.

This stipulated that the houses built on the properties had to be of a minimum size, that they had to be brick and that no front fences would be permitted. To maintain the country club feel of the development, Sir Leon decreed that power would be provided via an underground cable which accounts for the clean uncluttered look of the area to this day.

During their lifetimes the couple made substantial donations to the Queensland Art Gallery but the balance of their collection was sold by Christie's auctioneers on June 6 & 7, 1989 after the death of Lady Peggy who had survived Sir Leon by 10 years.

An article in the Sunday Mail later that month recorded that the Queensland      Art Gallery had spent $1.9-million at the sale buying items for its collection including a portrait of Sir Leon by William Dobell and one of Lady Peggy by William Dargie. Top price at the auction was $700,000 paid by another buyer for a John Russell picture.

And so ended an era in which the couple had made a major impact on Brisbane Society. Their home came to house, for a while at least, one of the finest art collections in Australia and was undoubtedly visited by the cream of Brisbane Society and visitors to the city.

The North West News reported earlier this year that the Trouts Estate Community Action Group has been campaigning to save limit the density of the development at the Everton House site to less than the 20 units approved for the site.

Mary Di Marco was responsible for much of the research that went into this article and she feels that, while one has to move with the times, it would be very sad to forget the contribution made by Sir Leon and Lady Peggy. After all, the results of their vision and enterprise can still be seen be seen all around us and parts of their art collection still grace our city's art gallery.
